It’s been five weeks since our parents died. That day, I became the legal guardian of my two younger siblings, Marq and Lorraine. I’m the only family member they have now. My life is now dedicated to taking care of them both.

“Hey, Gen. What are you thinking about?” I’m snapped out of my thoughts when Lorraine sits down beside me. She’s smiling. I finger the necklace Mother gave me. “I was thinking about our parents.” Pain momentarily flickers across my sister’s face, and I immediately regret telling her so. She casually tucks a strand of hair behind one ear, then switches topics. “Marq is working on a new project. Isn’t that exciting?” Lorraine asks, eyes gleaming.

Marq is the youngest sibling. But he’s exceptionally intelligent. Our brother is always working on some sort of project. His level of intelligence is unparalleled.

“Do you know what he’s working on?” I ask curiously. Lorraine shakes her head. The thing about Marq was that he only revealed a project when it was finished.

Suddenly, an alarm goes off, startling us both. “Come on!” Lorraine says urgently. When we enter Marq’s room, sparks are flying everywhere. “What is going on?!” Lorraine asks, startled by the chaos surrounding us. Then, I finally spot Marq in front of a crackling ball of electricity. “Marq!” I shout, racing towards him.

My brother looks back at me, eyes filled with fear. Then he’s swallowed up by the orb of electricity, and Lorraine screams. Time seems to slow down, and the last thing I see is blinding white light. Then everything goes dark.

The lab. Utter chaos. Lorraine screaming. The events play in slow motion. Then I slowly wake up. “He’s conscious,” an unfamiliar voice says. “How did he get here?” another voice asks, sounding suspicious. I open my eyes and see several canine creatures standing over me.

“Who are you?” one of them, a sheepdog, asks. I get to my feet, sizing them up. All of them are much taller than me.
