Here’s chapter one of a story I‘m writing called dragon boy and the quest for the sheath. Tell me if I made any mistakes

When the time is right and the moon is bright,

Chapter one

Snake walked along the busy cobblestone road lined with merchants and people going about their business. He looked up and down the street looking for anywhere to spend his money. As he walked on he saw something. It was the citadel. The citadel was his favorite place to be. With a smile he walked on towards the building. When he got there he walked to the front. Once he got there he saw a giant statue of God. With a deep sigh he walked over to the statue and knocked three times. Immediately the statue shot down further and further until it disappeared into the ground. A ladder extended out of the ground and Snake descended. At the bottom was a giant city with sparkling lights and welcoming houses everywhere. Snake walked over to his town’s citadel and climbed the steps. When he got to the top he went inside. Inside was practically the same citadel as before but instead of the statue of God there was a statue of the Devil.

Immediately five boys his age swung down to him with ropes. There were Sam, Max, Bill, Joe, and Peter. Those boys were his only friends in the world.

“Did you see that?” said Peter, the wildest of the group. “That rope swinging was amazing.”

“That was awesome,” Snake replied. The six friends shared a laugh.

“What did you get while we were away?” Joe asked.

“Just a few bread crumbs,” Snake said laughing as he undid a blanket he was carrying to reveal an entire feast before them. “Dig in.”

The boys shared another laugh and began gobbling  up the food. In seconds it was gone. When it was gone Bill said,

“I know what we can do next.”

“What,” said Snake.”

“We will take control of the newspaper and tell them of an army that’s approaching. A giant army bigger than ever. One thousand hundred trillion soldiers.”

“Is that even a number?” Snake asked.

Bill hesitated. “Probably,” he said.

The boys walked along for a while. As they walked along they discussed their favorite subjects. Rope climbing, pranks, robberies, traps, girls, rope swinging, new tactics, and how to make life more interesting. The boys were in a heated conversation about how to make a massive robotic fire breathing winged dragon when a mouse ran up to them. Snake threw a dagger at the mouse but missed. The mouse quickly darted into a hole. Snake sighed and retrieved his dagger. The friends continued home. Soon they reached the town square. The square was divided into five parts: fencing, partying, trading, counselling, and just silly games. The boys headed through the square and into the neighborhoods.

The boys lived in a quiet little neighborhood where nothing exciting happened. Well, nothing was supposed to happen. Snake and his gang made sure of it.

“What should we do now?” said Sam.

Snake had no idea. The friends decided to go to a special part of the town where there was a shop that sold the newspaper. Snake ran to the shop followed by his friends. Snake picked up a copy of the news and read it out loud in front of his friends.

Town Devil retires from the devil of the town.

Last night the Town Devil decided to retire. After a fit of coughing for the last two weeks, he feels it is right to retire his post. Tryouts for the next devil will be held in the town square. If you are interested in becoming the devil please report to the town square on Tuesday seven o’clock. There is an age limit of seventeen to thirty. There are expectations for especially good people. If you want to be of an expectation then you need to at least have robbed eighty living animals or people. No more than twenty people at the limit are allowed. This town’s Devil will judge. If he finds someone who is capable enough to take his place he will pick the person and ask him to be the next Devil. If the person says yes then he will be immediately given the position of Devil of the town. If the person says no then he will be given a hundred thousand coins from the treasury and wished good luck in the following years.

Snake looked at his friends.

“Are you thinking what I’m thinking?” he said.

His friends looked at him. Smiles grew on their faces as they realized what he was thinking.

“I love it,” Max said.

The friends laughed and high fived each other.

“Ok,” said Snake. “We’ve got a lot to do. You should compete, too. How many living things have you robbed?” All of the boys had robbed eighty. “Alright,” Snake said. “Let’s go have some fun.”

When they got to the square they went in different directions. Joe went to the fencing arena, Max went to check out the festivals they were having in the party field, Sam went to the trading center, Bill went to watch a trial in the courtyard, Peter took a nap on the silly game part that had the best benches that were practically made for napping, and Snake went home. The second he walked through the door he was greeted by the smell of bacon cooking on the stove. “I’m home,”Snake called. Immediately his parents walked into the hall.

“Hi,” said his mother. “How was your thieving.”

“Good,” said Snake, walking into the kitchen and helping himself to some bacon.

“Thats nice,” said his father. Snake nodded and walked up to his room. His room was larger than most rooms in the house. It had a bed in one corner and a bookshelf in the other. Leaning against the wall was a desk. Snake picked up his favorite book from the bookshelf. It was called World Legends. Snake was on the last legend. He opened the book to his spot and began to read. It was called the dragon legend. Snake loved dragons. He settled in a comfy spot on his bed and began to read.

                    THE DRAGON LEGEND

One of the world’s most common legends is the dragon legend. It tells from long ago where the world was just being created. The dragons ruled the earth. They flew around with their gigantic wings. Life was peaceful and calm. The dragons ruled peacefully. It was the golden age of dragons. Then the humans came. They came with their guns and swords and drove the race to near extinction. The leader of the army of humans was a tall  thin man with enchanted silver armor and an enchanted silver sword. Only the wearer of the armor and bearer of the sword could be his equal. There is a prophecy of the time where dragons will come again. A dragon rider will wear the silver sword and armor. He will rise up against his enemy. And he will win plunging the world into another golden age.

Snake stared at the book. It was short but fantastic. He ran outside to show his friends. Outside it was freezing cold. Snake hurried to the town square. When he got there he met up with his friends. They agreed that the legend was the coolest legend in the book. After that the six friends decided to do a little robbery. They walked to the citadel and pulled the lever next to the statue of the Devil. The statue went down down down followed by the statue of God. Snake climbed the ladder followed by Sam, Joe, Peter, Bill, and Max. They walked across the citadel and to the nearest house. Luckily the street was deserted. Sam looked into the window and said, “There’s a family of eight. Parents and three boys and three girls.”

“Perfect,” said Snake. “Lets go.”

“Wait,” said Sam looking again. “There’s a sword hanging from the mantlepiece.” Snake smiled. “You say you’re doubting my skills.”

Sam smiled. “Never,” he said.

Max grabbed the handle. “Everybody ready,” he said.

The friends nodded. With a deep breath Max flung the door open. Snake jumped open pulling a sword from his belt.

“FREEZE,” he yelled.

The father grabbed his sword and charged Snake. Snake closed his eyes and knocked the sword out of the man’s hand. Max caught with his feet. “You idiot,” Snake said. “I told you to freeze. Snake looked around at his friends. “Search the house.” he said. “Look for secret panels and bring me every box and chest.” His friends obeyed. Eight minutes later Sam returned carrying fifty boxes of jewelry. Joe Came back later dragging  eighty bags of coins. Peter brought a bow and about fifty quivers of arrows. Max already had the sword so he didn’t bring back anything for himself though he did get a sheath and a sharpener for the sword.

Now it was Snake’s turn. He left the living room. He walked through  a maze of corridors until he found a door inside was a long stone staircase. He walked up to it and came to a door on the side. Looking back Snake wondered if he should have entered the room. He was sure to find something of use and live a normal life. But he didn’t. Instead as if he was following orders he placed his hand on the wall. The wall swung away. In its place was a stone staircase. He walked up the staircase. At the top was a long door. Snake tried it. It was locked. There was a lock on the door. Snake pulled on it. The lock didn’t budge. Snake tried again and in the process he accidentally slipped a finger into the keyhole. The door disappeared. Snake walked through the door and into the room on the other side. The room was empty except for a chest straight in the middle. Snake opened the chest and inside was the most beautiful hunk of marble Snake ever saw. It was golden and silver and emerald. It was just beautiful. Snake immediately knew he had to have it. He slowly picked it up. It felt warm in his grasp and Snake felt a little light-headed. Shaking the feeling off he carried the stone out of the room. As he did so the door disappeared and was replaced by a solid wall. As Snake walked down the stairs, a wall followed in his footsteps, enclosing what he had just crossed. When he got to the door he opened it and walked into the living room. His friends stared at the stone in his hands. Sam  jumped to his feet and held out his hands for the stone. Snake handed it to him. Sam jumped back.

“Cold,” he said.

Confused, Snake said, “Let’s go home.”

The boys walked out of the house and walked through the citadel and to their town. Snake walked through the town to his home. When he got there he opened the door. Inside his mother was cooking a chicken. Snake ran upstairs and stared at the stone for a long time. Now that he noticed it clearly, he realized that it was ugly. There were chips and cracks everywhere. He considered throwing it away, but for some reason he couldn’t. He could feel some connection between him and the stone that was too strong to ignore. He sighed and got on his bed. Too tired for dinner, too tired to examine the stone, too tired to even turn out the light, he fell asleep.

He was walking across the street. Not walking, flying. Great silver wings flapped on either side of him. A giant head stretched out in front of him. The streets were packed with people. They were all walking towards the town square. The Town Devil was on a giant platform. He said something and Snake saw his friends and about fifteen other boys walk out onto the stage. Snake leaped off whatever it was and joined the boys. The Devil said something and as if by an invisible force, Snake leaped at a boy, his sword ready. The swords clashed in the morning sunlight. All around the square Snake could see other people clashing swords. Snake easily knocked the sword out of his opponent’s hand and waited for another winner. Once one of the boys flung the sword from another boy’s hand, Snake kicked the boy to the ground and wrenched his sword out of his hand. This went  on for a while until the only boys with a sword were Snake, his friends, and Snake’s enemy Aiden. Snake charged Aiden but Aiden had already struck Sam’s sword. So Snake went to Bill. Luckily for him his friends wanted him to win so he tore through them like butter. Soon it was just Snake and Aiden. Snake lifted his sword but Aiden sent it flying out of his hand. Aiden said something and all the people charged Snake. Just then his friends charged into the fray throwing swords this way and that. Snake ran to help them but the dragon he was flying earlier blocked him. Snake tried to climb over it but the second he had grabbed a spike the dragon took off bursting through the grassy ceiling into the night.  When the time is right and the moon is bright,
